Ants in Kilburn's Lower-Ground and Garden Flats
Black garden ants want loose, warm, free-draining ground they can tunnel through undisturbed, and the made ground around an old house gives them that: bedding sand under worn flagstones, rubble behind a retaining wall, the strip of dry soil at the foot of a back addition. A lower-ground kitchen sits on the same level as all of it. The colony itself stays outdoors; what comes indoors is a foraging line after something sweet. Front lightwells and area steps
A lightwell is a small paved box that holds the afternoon sun, drains slowly and is hardly ever disturbed. Slabs work loose down there, the steps from the pavement crack, and the wall alongside carries air bricks and pipe entries at the height of a kitchen worktop. Small heaps of fine soil pushed up between the flags in June are the clearest sign that a colony is living underneath.
Back doors onto a shared path or garden
At the back, several flats may open onto one path, one flight of steps or a garden nobody owns alone. Ants use the joint where a back addition meets the main house, the threshold of a door that no longer shuts tightly, and the holes where waste pipes leave the kitchen wall. Flying Ants Over a Kilburn Garden
For a few humid days each summer, colonies send out winged queens and males together. Watching them rise from a crack in the lightwell or between the flags of the back path marks where a nest already was, and a day or two later it is finished. Winged ants coming up through a kitchen floor, from under a skirting or around an old hearth matter more, because the nest may be beneath the floor rather than the yard, so mention it when you book. Very Small Pale Ants in a Heated Block
Pharaoh ants are a different proposition from garden ants. They are minute, yellowish and almost translucent, they nest inside warm buildings rather than in the ground, and they are associated with heated blocks rather than gardens. Why spraying makes it worse
